Advice from a Cardinal . . .

Stand out in a crowd.
Go out on a limb.
Be a bright spot in others lives.
Speak up.
Be home before dark.
Add color to your life.
Its ok to be a little Flashy.

Just thinking . . Sept. Full Moon setting

Harvest Moon setting on Tuesday Sept. 9, 2014
This moon has been so beautiful both at night and in the early morning when it is setting.

"The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others."
Albert Schweitzer

Well from when I first went to put this up and now . . . I have listened to the Funeral of a Fallen Police Officer in the line of duty in our city.  This quote honors him and the tireless work in the community to serve, & protect others while putting his own life at risk.   May his family and co-workers find peace in the days to come.

Easter 2014

the bunny came!

Asparagus Cheese Tart

Doughnut Bread Pudding

After dinner walk in nearby park- on a ridge Trail
Eggs 2014

Love all the bright colors!!
A few of the things that made Easter special.  We stayed home and caught up on some much needed yard work, some had not had attention for well over a year. We searched for Easter baskets, dyed eggs, went to church and Maundy Thursday  service, had a brunch and went for a nice walk afterward, it was close to 80 that day and as i write this- we are expecting snow overnight . . . .will it ever end???  Hoping that everyone enjoyed Easter  and all the joy that it brings with it.

December Daily or almost . . . .

Excerpts from"It began in a Manger" by Max Lucado

"The stable stinks like all stables do. The stench of urine, dung, and sheep reeks pungently in the air. The ground is hard, the hay scarce. Cobwebs cling to the ceiling and a mouse scurries across the dirt floor.
A more lowly place of birth could not exist."
"Off to one side sit a group of shepherds. They sit silently on the floor, perhaps perplexed, perhaps in awe, no doubt in amazement. Their night watch had been interrupted by an explosion of light from heaven and a symphony of angels. God goes to those who have time to hear him—so on this cloudless night he went to simple shepherds."

"Rest well, tiny hands. For though you belong to a king, you will touch no satin, own no gold. You will grasp no pen, guide no brush. No, your tiny hands are reserved for works more precious:
to touch a leper’s open wound,
to wipe a widow’s weary tear,
to claw the ground of Gethsemane."

Humble beginnings for sure. I think what I love best about nativity scenes is that they are interactive.  The individual that sets it up or looks at it can interact by moving the pieces around.  Creating a scene that they imagine or think it may have been like.
I had a surprise this year when I set it up.  We have a collection of rocks in the box from places we have been and use them to reate a rocky hillside or such that the Shepherds/ Kings may have traveled upon.  I picked up this one rock- speckled and smooth and on the backside was written Tremont Maine 2004 then the tear filled my eye . . . for this was the location of dear church friend Ray who had passed from this world to the next just 3 days earlier.  I had no idea that it was in that box. I can think of no finer remembrance of this Former Lobstah' fisherman, engineer then part of the nativity scene,  I placed his rock on top of a larger smooth rock from Cape Cod that is in memory of my FIL Dave.  The two of them had been great friends over the years. They are now part of the Great Story.  Rest well, you will not be forgotten.

Book Chatter . . .at Chestnut Hill. . . .

So I am clearly having issues with formatting this post, but bear with me. I am currently reading this book and could have finished it long ago ( just a few pages left) but am trying to savor it a little longer. It is the current read on my nightstand and I like it for that, because each chapter per Se' is short enough to read before I fall asleep although the past few nights, my eyes have shut with the book unopened in my hands to be removed by Erik when he comes in.
This is an easy to read rich and lovingly written memoir about cooking, friends, love and time spent around the table. It is a gift to provide food and nourish our friends and family with soul filling comfort food. This book traverses the seasons of the year and the seasons of life. Each chapter is short, that it is easy to start and finish. Many include a helpful yummy recipe at the end! Read, savor, enjoy and spend time with those you love around the table!

The November Moments No.32

"We are weighed down, every moment, by the conception and sensation of Time. And there are but two means of escaping  and forgetting this nightmare: pleasure and work. Pleasure consumes us. Work strengthens us.  Let us Choose. "           Charles Baudelaire

We are weighed down, every moment, by the conception and the sensation of Time. And there are but two means of escaping and forgetting this nightmare: pleasure and work. Pleasure consumes us. Work strengthens us. Let us choose.

Off for a few days to my favorite retreat space with favorite friends to sew, create, be with nature and be nourished by good food, fun and friends. May be quiet for a few days unless I have time before I leave to "set up a few posts"This location is beautiful in the Hills of the Southern Tier of WNY.  It will likely snow while we are there. I will hike every day and hope to make it to the Waterfall this year.  Lots of creative goodness will be happening.

The Moments: No. 8

God is Great, God is good
Let us thank him for our food
By his hands we all are fed
Give us Lord our Daily Bread
Amen

A daily moment I want to remember.  This is the grace we say most often but Holidays and Celebrations often call for more thoughtful and individualized Thanks and Grace.

Hearts in Nature . . . .

The Heart knows no end . . . .  Do you ever wonder what finding these little symbols of love mean?  Are these left for us to discover?  Are they meant to send us a message? Whatever they are beautiful.  These are from Elgin, Ontario Canada.

Cookies for Appreciation

So on Tuesday it was Teacher Appreciation day at the High School. Our contribution was this big basket of cookies. Big Ginger cookies far left, Oatmeal Chocolate Chip in the middle and Magic 7 layer bars on the right. My basket came back empty. I love baking and especially having somewhere to take the baked goods!
We appreciate all the big and small things that the teachers do for our kids and the youth of the community every day. It is work and a job but many go beyond that and touch lives and making their jobs be their passion and thus inspiring youth for their lives.
Thank YOU!

Thinking of Japan

As everyone around the world our thoughts and prayers go out to those in the Stricken areas of Japan. The devastation is amazing and the nuclear events are scary that are unfolding. We are glad that Japan was/is as prepared as they are. May all the families torn apart living there and those that are here with family there find each other. May there be safe drinking water, food and a place to rest for all. May those making decisions for the masses be rested and well advised. May rescuers and support be quick to arrive. Wishing those an ocean away much strength and courage as the days ensue.

Brigade 2010

Last weekend was International Scout Brigade- Re-inactment of War of 1812 in Canada
This brings together scouts from all over the USA and Canada to reenact the War of 1812 which was fought on the shores of Lake Ontario. The boys always look forward to this. Many make their own Muskets in the summer for this event.

Be my Hands . . .

Now Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1

Go forth with Faith as Youth groups journey today for a week to Maine for Rural Community Mission trip and to Toronto for an Urban Community Mission trip. Be with these youth and their leaders as they are the Hands and Feet of one greater than them. Help to open their eyes to a world beyond their everyday and most likely their comfort level. Help them see that all have self-worth and are worthy of their time and gifts. May they discover new gifts that they have to share. May they have cooler weather as well.
