Kauai Albatross Nesting with live Cam . . .

So I think on A wintry Sunday morning in Northeast USA it is a lovely time to see and hear the goodness of Tropical Hawaii,  These Albatross are nesting on Kauai and are wonderful to watch and just to see the greenry and hear all the lovely birdsong.  It is such a treat!!    Below are 2 links for the Live feed Cam that shows you the nesting area and a link to a blog that talks about the integration of the birds with the humans.   These are huge seabirds that spend all their days at sea, they fly thousands of miles for food.  They only come on land to nest.  There are different types of Albatrosses.  Most nest in HUGE beach colonies.  ( goggle Albatross nesting colonies for a looksy)  It is uncommon for this to be such a small colony but it is fun  all the same.

Enjoy the day!

Hurricane Irene 2011

The Day Before Irene
The day before was quite nice, calm, sunny but clouds rolling in. We put away furniture, tied up boats and stocked up a little in case the Power went out. Good Sailing day.

The day of Irene
We woke up to gusting roaring winds. We were on what they called the windy side of the Hurricane. We had gusty 50-60 mph winds all day and all night. Still blowing at midnight. Some areas lost lots of trees and branches and power. Our power went on and off all day/night but never totally off for a long time. We stayed in all day as the wind was to much and to dangerous to be out in. Puzzels, books, games, newspapers . . . . all kept us happy and busy. What looks like Fog is actually water being blown across the Pond. We had little to no rain. ( sorry ENYS and Vermont) Everything is a "pond" on Cape Cod even if the body of water would qualify to be a "lake" somewhere else.

The day after Irene
Sometime during the night the roaring winds ceased. We woke up and it was ever so peaceful, quiet, still and calm. The sky was clear, crisp and brilliant sunny as you can see. Unfortunately we had to start the trek home instead of staying to enjoy the beauty after the fury. It took us a while to get home as large parts of I-90 in NYS were closed and we needed to detour. Some roads we drove on were newly opened after being flooded just hours before. We were lucky. The devastation was surreal. So much water, so quickly leaving so much damage.

Hurricaine Irene

Sitting in the Path of Irene waiting to see how it all pans out We are in a safe spot as far as the Cape goes. Lots of fog and little rain on and off right now. Most wind and rain will arrive tomorrow. I went through a similar storm Fall of 85 Hurricane Gloria while in Conneticut. We are ready. PS So very glad to not be in tent on this trip.

Red Squirrel Fun

So I was waiting in a Parking lot in Acadia - You see my adventurous children were exploring rocky ledges and cliffs at low tide and Dad was with them and I decided after one to many deep breathes that we all would enjoy this moment more if I did not watch. My head of course knew they were safe but my heart kept leaping up my throat and it was just not a good time. I retreated to a parking lot, took some photos of local flora and sketched, read a book and caught these little devils in action. At first I did not think much of it but then it was clear that a show was to be seen. Whenever you are quiet and still in nature the most amazing things can happen. There seemed to be a whole family sharing this recycling container as they would race in and out hardly stopping at times to see if the coast was clear. I showed my kids pictures and I think they still were not sure and then- bam they saw the real thing in living color - quite a good laugh.

Just back . . . . .

Ahh - getting away . . . . there is this wild rush and flurry both on departure and in coming back home. It seems at times that it is hardly worth all the effort and planning but then you are there , living the moments and then you are looking back at those moments and it is worth it. We had a wonderful time. We camped in a tent for 2 weeks at 2 different locations. We were on the go a lot so there was not a lot of down time or relaxing which was a little hard for me. We had foggy days and bright sunny days. We were on land and water and were able to see a lot of wildlife. I will try to put together some more posts to show you. We were not where we had much of any cell coverage or wi-fi but I can't say I missed it. Here it is hot sunny and dry.
