Mandalas

So first I was visiting Daisy Yellow down in Texas . . . . and I watched her Mandala Madness video
found here  .  Her videos are always inspiring, creative and have great music.  You will not be disappointed. Then I ventured out on my own and created these.  It always feels great to have completed something artistic. My days are filled with helping people and documenting on a computer so it is a great escape to do something like this.   Give it a try.

Garden Mid- August 2014

Hibiscus Flower

Rose of Sharon - Bush

Main Garden

Walkway colorful and filling in

Lots of red tomatoes and orange marigolds

Hops are making blooms - ladybugs have arrived as well.

Coleus are bright and bold.

The garden in Mid-August is full of color.  The Tomatoes are ready, very sweet adn juicy.  The strawberries are producing again.  Many of the flowers are mature and in full bloom.  Zinnias, Marigolds, cosmos. The Hops are beginning to flower as well. The crickets can be heard chirping all day long.  Oddly we are having September weather , cool, dark, cloudy, rain and feeling like Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup days.  We are busy packing up 2 kids to head off to College this next week. I was just thinking today that it will be bulb planting season soon- it seems to early but September is but on our footstep.  It is headed our way whether we like it or not. While I miss the sun and its warmth- these days can be reflective too.  I am busily trying to finish a Quilt for one of my kids to take to college  - I am in the quilting stage . . .  Hoping I can finish it!!!
Be well and enjoy your gardens.
I need to do some serious weeding- just one week away and the sweet clover has taken over.   This year the birds have dropped Poison Ivy seeds in my garden and they are causing me havoc.

Just Thinking . . . .

When walking, you see things that you miss in a motor car or on the train. You give your mind space to ponder.

Tom Hodgkinson

This is some of the summer fun already . . .taking apart motors, making dirt bikes go fast, making something out of nothing, questioning- "Can we do it?"  Trying out hypothesis, sitting and tinkering, eating Taco Bell, drinking Mountain Dew, contemplating life.

Wedding Song...... Throwback Thursday

What was your wedding song?
26 years ago - this was our wedding song.
The Best Man and Maid of Honor - our best friends,  met for the first time at our Rehearsal,  then several years later, were married. It has been such a good 26 years.

Nesting Birds at Chestnut Hill . . .

House Wren's

Blue birds and one is on a branch right above the house.

Baby Blue Birds maybe 5 days old

Rosy Breasted Nuthatch - they are thinner than this picture depicts.

So it seems that our yard is a haven for birds and nesting birds which could not make us happier. My  college daughter is keenly interested in Birds and hopes one day to do research in Ornithology.  She said it is fine to check on nesting birds.  You first knock on the box so if there is an adult in side it fly's out, then you open up the box briefly. They actually learned all about this in one of her wildlife management classes. That is why I can show you a picture of baby Blue birds.  Our Hammock is between 2 big Norway spruce which is near the Nuthatch house and it is fascinating to watch the parents come and go feeding the babies.  The Nuthatch babies are older then the blue birds.  The box is not such that I can show them to you though. Watching these little birds carry on teh cycle of life is really a special treat and grounds you to what in the end is important in life. Shelter, food, family, Love.

Just thinking . . .

“The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quite alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature. As longs as this exists, and it certainly always will, I know that then there will always be comfort for every sorrow, whatever the circumstances may be. And I firmly believe that nature brings solace in all troubles.”
Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl

This view can be nightly just from standing in the driveway or sitting on the front lawn. Just starting to see lots of little newborns.  Love all the different shades of green depicted here.

Watercolor Play . . .

A few weeks back, after watching a wonderful little video at Daisy Yellow . . . I decided to take a break from chores and play . . . this is hard for me to do as there  are so many things that pull my attention and time.  . . .  I had lots of fun and love the bright colored papers I now have to use in other creative projects.   I right away made some postcards to send out to a few friends.  Maybe you will want to see Tammy's video and get out your paints!!! You won't be disappointed.

Inspire me . . .Early Morning Light

“It's not what you have on the outside that glitters in light, it's what you have on the inside that shines in the dark.”

Inspire me . . .

“The world is a great mirror. It reflects back to you what you are. If you are loving, if you are friendly, if you are helpful, the world will prove loving and friendly and helpful to you. The world is what you are.” Thomas Dreier (1884-1976

I hope that my children have and are still learning this.  It may not be easy to accept those that are not kind, courteous and helpful but always lead by example.   We never know what else is going on in someones life.  Do they have enough food and shelter, are they loved or are they in an un loving relationship.  Are they or a loved one battling with illness or financial struggle?  It is hard to know.  I think it is especially hard when someone in a customer service position provides poor service, but it leads me to ask why? We absolutely all have bad days, it is how we handle them that makes all the difference.

Tea any body?

So this was a gift from a co-worker.  She is an incredibly creative and kind person.  I love tea and I love Hands.  There is a thin cardboard base like a record album - but narrow and then the clothes pins are hot glued onto the cardboard.  She added all the tea and it could be replaced with photos.  The Hands are just fun foam.  My other co-worker got one like it but it had bright red lips as she cannot work with out her Channel Red lipstick . . . I thought this was really creative.  Marsha my co-worker is such a hard worker,  kind and gentle, a hug when you need it and always a smile and positive words.   She has a lot on her plate but finds time to do such nice things as this.   The world could definitely use more Marsha's in it.   Thank you for being such a great co-worker!   The post it hangs on is right in the middle of my kitchen - so it is front and center for a while.

One Little Word 2014

Breathe
Breathe
Breathe
Breathe
Breathe
Breathe
Breathe

***** I have for several years now been inspired by Ali Edwards  and chosen "One Word" something to focus on for a year and to grow with, explore and live.  Past years have included Joy, Focus, Organize . . .
This year I choose Breathe.
I am not sure where it will take me but it is the word that speaks to me. There is a lot of change happening over the next year and I am sure I will need to stop and Just breathe on more than one occasion.

breathe

verb (used without object), breathed [breethd] Show IPA , breath·ing.
1.
to take air, oxygen, etc., into the lungs and expel it; inhale and exhale; respire.
2.
(in speech) to control the outgoing breath in producing voice and speech sounds.
3.
to pause, as for breath; take rest: How about giving me a chance to breathe?
4.
to move gently or blow lightly, as air.
5.
to live; exist: Hardly a man breathes who has not known great sorrow.
“Sometimes it's the same moments that take your breath away that breathe purpose and love back into your life.”
Steve Maraboli

December Daily or almost . . . .

Excerpts from"It began in a Manger" by Max Lucado

"The stable stinks like all stables do. The stench of urine, dung, and sheep reeks pungently in the air. The ground is hard, the hay scarce. Cobwebs cling to the ceiling and a mouse scurries across the dirt floor.
A more lowly place of birth could not exist."
"Off to one side sit a group of shepherds. They sit silently on the floor, perhaps perplexed, perhaps in awe, no doubt in amazement. Their night watch had been interrupted by an explosion of light from heaven and a symphony of angels. God goes to those who have time to hear him—so on this cloudless night he went to simple shepherds."

"Rest well, tiny hands. For though you belong to a king, you will touch no satin, own no gold. You will grasp no pen, guide no brush. No, your tiny hands are reserved for works more precious:
to touch a leper’s open wound,
to wipe a widow’s weary tear,
to claw the ground of Gethsemane."

Humble beginnings for sure. I think what I love best about nativity scenes is that they are interactive.  The individual that sets it up or looks at it can interact by moving the pieces around.  Creating a scene that they imagine or think it may have been like.
I had a surprise this year when I set it up.  We have a collection of rocks in the box from places we have been and use them to reate a rocky hillside or such that the Shepherds/ Kings may have traveled upon.  I picked up this one rock- speckled and smooth and on the backside was written Tremont Maine 2004 then the tear filled my eye . . . for this was the location of dear church friend Ray who had passed from this world to the next just 3 days earlier.  I had no idea that it was in that box. I can think of no finer remembrance of this Former Lobstah' fisherman, engineer then part of the nativity scene,  I placed his rock on top of a larger smooth rock from Cape Cod that is in memory of my FIL Dave.  The two of them had been great friends over the years. They are now part of the Great Story.  Rest well, you will not be forgotten.

Book Chatter . . .at Chestnut Hill. . . .

So I am clearly having issues with formatting this post, but bear with me. I am currently reading this book and could have finished it long ago ( just a few pages left) but am trying to savor it a little longer. It is the current read on my nightstand and I like it for that, because each chapter per Se' is short enough to read before I fall asleep although the past few nights, my eyes have shut with the book unopened in my hands to be removed by Erik when he comes in.
This is an easy to read rich and lovingly written memoir about cooking, friends, love and time spent around the table. It is a gift to provide food and nourish our friends and family with soul filling comfort food. This book traverses the seasons of the year and the seasons of life. Each chapter is short, that it is easy to start and finish. Many include a helpful yummy recipe at the end! Read, savor, enjoy and spend time with those you love around the table!

Postcard Swap Fall 2013

So usually once or twice a year ihanna from Sweden coordinates a International Postcard Swap, I have participated for many years now.  Here are a couple of what I sent out this year and soon I will post ones that I am receiving.  They go to USA, Italy,England, Sweden . . . all over.  I create 10 postcards and then I am given 10 addresses.  I send my 10 to those addresses.  The 10 I receive are not from the people I send to. IT is lots of fun to see what others do and are thinking. One year I received one that was all knitted. Some are simple and some are complex.  Stay tuned for more on this great postcards swap!!
